Seven students completed their internship with Conyers Dill & Pearman over the summer months.
Interns got an inside look at how an international law firm is run over the course of four weeks and were allowed the opportunity to work alongside lawyers and support teams in the legal profession.
Conyers’ summer internship programme is made up of students who have applied directly for placement as well as law students on scholarships with Conyers. Conyers has also been a participant of Cayman Finance’s Work Placement Programme since its inception and hosts two of its students each summer.
The aim of the internship programme is to open doors for young Caymanians, providing them with mentorship and training, so they can decide whether they want to pursue a legal career.
Sean-Anna Thompson, a second year intern explained “My mentors have shown genuine interest in my studies and provided guidance as well as great career advice”. Ms Thompson was also the recipient of this year’s Legal Education Award, providing her with a full scholarship for her return to the University of Westminster where she is completing her LPC studies.
Participating in the program this year was 15 year old Rafael McKenzie, a John Gray High School student and second place winner of Conyers Inter-Schools Debate Tournament: “Thanks to this opportunity, I have a far better idea of what it will take to become a lawyer and the different challenges I will face, as well as the rewards and achievements that can accompany them”.
The paid internship ran during the months of July and August and has continued to see an increase in applications each year.
Paul Smith, Partner and Head of Litigation in the Cayman Islands, said: “These initiatives provide a real opportunity for students to train and develop in a variety of skills. We thank all of our interns for their hard work this summer and look forward to watching as they further their studies and career aspirations”.
Students looking to join the program for 2018 should submit applications by 31st March 2018.
