Business BVI International Arbitration Conference a Success

Conyers Dill & Pearman was pleased to support the Business BVI International Arbitration Conference as its only Diamond Sponsor.

The event boasted a tremendous success, playing host to over 100 thought leaders from the local and international dispute resolution community. The conference was designed to engage in high-level dialogue about BVI’s next steps in becoming a global arbitration centre, given the new Arbitration Act in effect.

Distinguished guests included Lord Goldsmith PC QC, head of Debevoise and Plimpton, London office and distinguished jurist; Dr. the Honorable D. Orlando Smith, OBE, Premier of the Virgin Islands who delivered opening remarks and Justice Barry Leon, High Court of the Virgin Islands who gave the keynote address. Conyers’ leading advocates from BVI and Bermuda participated in panels as moderators and speakers. Richard Evans introduced the Finding our Niche panel, which focused on differentiating among international arbitration centres and Tameka Davis and Jeffery Elkinson’s panel discussed The Courts & Arbitration, where panelists addressed questions by referring to legislation and case law and experiences in other jurisdictions.

Mark Forte, Head of Litigation in Conyers’ BVI office said: “We were delighted to be part of this important event, which gave great focus to international arbitration and how the BVI has a part to play on the world stage”.

Conyers supported the event with a cocktail reception, which provided guests the opportunity to further network and engage on the day’s events.
