Shipping

Conyers Dill & Pearman’s pre-eminent offshore shipping practice advises on the laws of Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands and Mauritius, from offices in those jurisdictions, as well as in the major financial centres of Hong Kong, London and Singapore.

We are at the forefront of ship finance and shipping capital markets work throughout Scandinavia, Europe, Asia and the America’s, advising many shipowners and lenders in those markets on the cross-border aspects of their transactions. Globally, we have acted on the offshore legal aspects of several award-winning transactions, which continues to demonstrate the range and depth of our global team. Conyers also maintains excellent relationships with the Bermuda Shipping and Maritime Authority, the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry and the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry in BVI and advises on all aspects of the registration process within each jurisdiction.

Our shipping practice includes advising on:

  • IPOs
  • Bond issuances
  • Notes offerings
  • Cross-border financings
  • Vessel purchases
  • Sales of private and commercial vessels
  • Structured financings
  • Securitizations

GLOBAL PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS

  • In Bermuda, our lawyers have advised on more IPOs for shipping and shipping-related companies than any other law firm; including the record breaking Team Tankers International transaction, which included a registration of 14 vessels (the most at one time in Bermuda) and listing on the Oslo Bors.
  • In Mauritius, our lawyers have advised on a variety of shipping-related transactions, notably financings and investment holding structures involving shipping assets (focusing on India and Asia).
  • In Cayman, we regularly advise on complex commercial shipping and superyacht transactions. One notable recent matter was the award-winning Alpha Bank securitization, recognised by Marine Money, in which Conyers acted not only as Cayman counsel but additionally advised as to the laws of Bermuda and the BVI.

LITIGATION

Our attorneys in each of the Bermuda, BVI and Cayman Islands offices have significant experience in various areas of maritime litigation, in particular ownership disputes and arrests.
