Insolvency and restructuring seminars well received across Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur

Conyers Dill & Pearman hosted a series of seminars across South East Asia last month, which saw Cayman Islands Head of Litigation Nigel Meeson QC discuss issues of insolvency and restructuring in the Cayman Islands with large audiences of lawyers, insolvency practitioners and other professional advisors in the region.

Invitation-only seminars were hosted in Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, which focused on many of the areas which have come to the fore since the recent economic downturn.

Attendees were particularly interested in discussing how out of court restructurings of offshore vehicles can be managed, as well as the relationship between the winding up of offshore companies in local courts (such as Hong Kong) and winding up in the place of incorporation (such as Cayman). Many also queried what means are available to obtain information in respect of offshore companies, particularly in the Cayman Islands. Other issues explored included options available to businesses when conditions deteriorate, and the role which insolvency lawyers from Cayman can play alongside local lawyers in each of these countries.

It was evident from the very high levels of attendance and the discussions both during and after the seminars that the Cayman Islands remain at the forefront of jurisdictions for structuring transactions and businesses for clients in the region, largely due to its options for restructuring and insolvency.

As the longest established offshore firm in Asia, Conyers has been at the forefront of corporate finance and capital markets work in the region for over 25 years. Conyers’ Cayman Islands litigation team works closely with its offices in Asia to provide responsive, timely and thorough legal advice on restructuring and insolvency issues to clients with activity in the region.
