Multi-jurisdictional law firm Conyers Dill & Pearman has added an associate to its Trust & Private Client practice in Bermuda with the hire of Brigit Morrison, effective July 20, 2009.

Brigit’s expertise includes all aspects of trust law practice from initial consultation through to implementation, review, resettlement and restructure together with interpretation and trustee advisory opinion work. Brigit will report to Alec Anderson, Global Head of Trust & Private Client.

Brigit formerly held the position of Senior Associate at Martelli McKegg Wells and Cormack in Auckland, New Zealand, operating within the Trusts and Estate Team and specializing in trust asset planning and relationship property issues. Prior to that, she worked at Allen & Overy in London with a focus on pensions. Brigit received her Bachelor of Law from Auckland University in 1989 and was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand at Auckland in July 1990.

Alec Anderson commented of Brigit’s hire: “Brigit adds to the depth and expertise of our Trust & Private Client team, which spans a global network of offices and has an established reputation for delivering the highest quality legal advice to international clients. We are fortunate to attract and retain high quality lawyers and are pleased to welcome Brigit to the firm.”

Commenting on her appointment, Brigit said: “Conyers has one of the largest and most experienced Trust & Private Client practices in the offshore sector and I look forward to joining the firm’s Bermuda practice. Bermuda’s reputation as a well regulated and leading jurisdiction has seen its trust business continue to thrive, and I am excited by the prospect of bringing my knowledge and previous experience to bear there.”

Conyers recognises that it is important to ensure that Bermuda maintains its reputation as a leading jurisdiction in order to continue to attract the best clients. The firm has been instrumental in driving through several important changes to Bermuda’s trust laws, including the Perpetuities and Accumulations Bill 2009 which abolished the perpetuity period for Bermuda law trusts, and the Trusts (Special Provisions) Act 1989 which ensures that trusts governed by Bermuda law may only be set aside by the Bermuda courts.

Conyers’ Trust & Private Client practice provides a comprehensive range of advisory and fiduciary services in the trust and wealth planning area to private clients, family businesses, IFAs, and institutional clients across the world, including the provision of trusteeship and administrative services and advising on trust restructuring and related fiduciary issues as well as on the creation and administration of private trust companies, trust administration and fiduciary issues, estate planning, and trust litigation and dispute resolution.
