CONYERS HOSTS MAURITIUS LAUNCH PARTY

Multi-jurisdictional law firm Conyers Dill & Pearman held a launch party on the 1st October in Mauritius in the presence of The Honorable Jayarama Valayden, Attorney General and Minister of Justice & Human Rights of Mauritius, to celebrate the opening of the firm’s Mauritius office and the establishment of its Mauritius legal practice.

The event was hosted at the Sofitel L’Imperial in Mauritius and saw nearly 100 high profile local figures, including many members of the judiciary. Conyers’ Chairman John Collis spoke at the event, which was also attended by the Mauritius based team of Craig Fulton, Nicolas Richard and Sameer Tegally, along with London based Mauritian lawyer Devalingum Gopalla and Dubai based Mauritian lawyer Sonia Xavier. Also attending from Conyers’ Bermuda office were Partner Anthony Whaley and Ross Webber (Head of Marketing).

The Honorable Mr. Valayden also spoke at the event, and said: “We are very pleased that Conyers are here with their reputation of providing timely, responsive and experienced expertise.” Mr. Valayden also congratulated the firm on being named Offshore Law Firm of the Year at the 2009 Lawyer Awards in London.

Commenting on Conyers’ move into Mauritius, John Collis said: “This marks an important step in our international growth as we continue to focus on providing the highest quality advice on pre-eminent jurisdictions across the world from locations convenient to our clients. The opening of our Mauritius office, with three attorneys on the ground supported by Mauritius-qualified lawyers in both our Dubai and London offices provides us with a strong entry into one of the key gateways for investment in and out of the burgeoning markets of India, China and Africa.”

Conyers initiated plans to launch in Mauritius in March 2008 with the establishment of Codan (Mauritius) Limited. In June 2009, Conyers formally launched its Mauritius legal practice, following recent amendments to Mauritius law which allow foreign law firms to establish operations in the jurisdiction.

The Mauritius team continues to grow and advises the world’s leading institutions on investment funds, private equity, joint ventures, banking and finance transactions, structured finance, as well as shipping and aircraft registration and financing.

Conyers’ Mauritius office is located in Ebene Cybercity and is the eleventh office for the firm, which advises on the laws of Mauritius, Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands and Bermuda from major strategic locations worldwide.
